Our first destination for observing birds in Singapore during our three week visit in March was Pasir Ris Park. It would be a great location to visit if you only had a few hours in Singapore and wanted to go beyond the airport to go bird watching. On one occasion we saw a pair of Red Turtle Doves beside the fishing lake.

While planning a much-needed escape from the Western Hemisphere to Singapore, I had to explore the layover birding potential of Narita International Airport, one of two airports serving Tokyo. More white-eyes and Great T**s were joined by Varied T**s , Hawfinches , Japanese Pygmy Woodpeckers , Pale Thrushes , and Firecrests.

Our location meant that during the height of the pearling industry here the Pearling Masters sent their “whites&# to be laundered in Singapore by sea, as that was the fastest option! There is a tendency for some people to drive onto the beach “just because we can&# and have little regard for the nesting turtles and birds.
