Unexpected, sudden moments of excitement came in the form of a few leaping Thresher Sharks (!), a couple sea turtles, and a jumping sailfish but no birds. Including this one perched on a sea turtle. Gazing at the empty water, brief flashes of doubt came to mind. Were there going to be any birds?

If you want to see a virtual fly through of what the new facility will look like, here is a video: I am pretty excited about the new building, especially because there will be a tunnel of sharks to walk under, and more penguins! I also really love the sea turtle, and the “petting” area where you can touch little sharks and rays.

The animals threatened most by the spill are bluefin tuna, sea turtles, brown pelicans, shrimp and sharks. Right now, there are still no confirmed deaths due to the spill, but rescue groups are gearing up for the worst.

It’s almost a bucolic place; sea turtles nest on the beaches, Humpback Whales and bat rays frolic just offshore, and you can buy the freshest fish from the panga fisherman at Punta Lobos every afternoon. Judging by the number of people I know who have been there at one time or another, you might find yourself there some day.
