From the border check station, you can turn to the right and go to the “Highest Bar in Africa” or continue into the unknown. The views were filled with scrubby, low vegetation, dramatic mountains, sheep herds, and sheep herders. With the lack of trees, it was a surprise that a woodpecker is still taking up space.

I wondered, last August, how animals endure it — the tiny ever-pumping lungs of hummingbirds, the lungs of bighorn sheep shouldering their way up mountains, they must get filled with smoke too, right? And I think this is a good move, the right move, even though part of me still welcomes the rain.

A Blue-throated Hummingbird just flew right past us, and over to one of the feeders. When the Coopers Hawk blew thru the yard looking for a meal, it just froze, and stayed right there for nearly 5 minutes, plenty of time for me to approach, and get this picture. That is our 5th wheel on the right corner.

Nestled right in the middle of Europe, we have a little bit of everything, a nice cross section of Europe’s avifauna. Then of course, we have amazing birds such as Wallcreeper , Hoopoe , and Black Woodpecker. For sure we have great birds like Great Crested Grebe , Great Bustard , and Great Spotted Woodpecker.
