November 12, 2008) – Busch Gardens Tampa Bay welcomed a new baby white rhinoceros on Wednesday, Nov. The female rhino was born in the night quarters adjacent to their 26-acre white rhino habitat on Busch Gardens’ Serengeti Plain. The birth brings the total white and black rhino population at the adventure park to 12.

A close encounter with a couple of White Rhinos gave me a good opportunity to get a proper look at some Red-billed Ox-peckers Buphagus Erythrorhynchus that often accompany them. Rhino skin is very tough and despite spending much of their time amongst the thorn bushes, scratches are usually only superficial.

The annual number of rhino poached in South Africa last year rose to 1,215, Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa told a media briefing in Pretoria two weeks ago. On average, over 100 rhinos were illegally killed each month. Molewa added that so far this year 49 rhino had been killed countrywide.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay welcomes its seventh baby white rhino since 2004. The adorable baby, a female, will join other rhinos in the 26-acre white rhino habitat on Busch Gardens’ Serengeti Plain. Busch Gardens has celebrated a total of seventh white rhino births since October 2004.

Although smaller than the White Rhinoceros, the Black is far more pugnacious and feared, often charging without provocation, whereas the relatively more docile and lumbering White Rhinoceros will often ignore an intruder and keep on grazing. Black Rhinos are best sought in South Africa, Namibia and Tanzania.

Also, the lake is the most reliable place for both Black and White Rhinos in the whole of East Africa. Roger Tory Peterson called it “the most fabulous bird spectacle in the world”. Large numbers of Palearctic waders winter at Nakuru or use the site on passage.

Busch Gardens supports the conservation of and education about cheetahs through the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund, which has donated nearly $100,000 to cheetah efforts in Africa since 2005 and also helps fund conservation programs for white rhinos, marine animals and many other species around the world.
