Galápagos: A Natural History, Second Edition by John Kricher and Kevin Loughlin gives the traveling naturalist the tools needed to fully appreciate and experience the Galápagos Islands. The 11th chapter is on research and conservation challenges. Still, I wish I had prepared. I wish I had read this book.

However, we now know that human ancestors became upright first, and were bipedal for millions of years before they started to use tools extensively, and then another million years went by before their brains started to evolve a significantly larger size. One part of this question can be answered with some very interesting recent research.

It is acceptable to point out other sea creatures–dolphins or whales or dragonflies–but the main goal is the observation and identification of the birds. The latter are particularly useful tools for learning about both plumage cycles and species differentiation. It is a challenging activity.
