Sepilok is a spotlighter’s dream, and our hotel organised a trip for us with a warden from the Orangutan Sanctuary. We heard, but didn’t see, a Brown Wood-ow l, and best of all a massive cat-sized Red Giant Flying Squirrel and a rabbit-sized Sunda Stink-badger. It is hard to tell, but it is massive!

It was advisable to remove them at night, to keep them calm, to establish immediately a feeding board on which they would be fed chopped beef and egg to start, then fresh birds, rabbit or squirrel. This in-between world of freedom supplemented with food from an undetected source was known as hacking.

In June 2006, Jane and I visited a chimpanzee sanctuary near Girona, Spain. They were brought separately to the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tenn., He never chased the rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, or deer who regularly visited. Chimpanzees also dance at the onset of heavy rains and during violent gusts of wind.
