Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor. This is not to say that there wasn’t a little birding time snuck in here and there.

Although some of the most popular Pacific pelagic trips depart from Monterey Bay in California, there are also regular trips out of Half Moon Bay, California; Newport, Oregon; and Westport, Washington. There are also smaller breeding colonies in Washington and Oregon, including Oregon Islands NWR. The target birds tend to be similar.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. My first bird in Washington DC, where I am visiting for the weekend. Wicked, right?

They are commonest where they are intensively protected and managed, but these places are often remote and hard to visit. Seeing a wild kiwi is potentially the highlight of a star-strewn birding visit to New Zealand, but please respect the tenuous situation the five species are in and any measures in place for their protection.
