Birdlife South Africa has previously done two of these types of trips before, previously called Flock to Sea – Namibia in 2013 and Flock to Nowhere in 2017, in partnership with MSC Cruises. The marine protected area status was designated in 2013. It is an extremely popular fundraising project with an almost cult-like following.

This map shows the distribution of the World’s bird species, based on overlying the breeding and wintering ranges of all known species. I live in the southeast of Europe, for a while lived in the south of Africa and also have extensively birded western and central India. Which leaves only East Africa. And it shows.

We are facing a plague of poaching that is again decimating the species. One may say so.

Two White Storks awaited us there, choosing to stay for the winter instead of wasting all those calories to fly down to South Africa and back, and above us, seven young White-tailed Eagles were thermaling. The number of gulls had halved by now, but the weather had improved and was sunny and quite warm for this time of the year.

Or, Pygmy leaf-folding frogs, Afrixalus brachycnemis, from Tanzania, tiny climbing frogs who lay their eggs in leaves and then fold the leaves over them for protection, sealing the nest with secretions. There’s the Goliath frog from South Africa—up to one foot in length and over 6 pounds in weight. This is not a field guide.

Universities like Harvard, Columbia and Cornell regularly use the research facility. On the grounds, Punta Cana has preserved a 1,500 acre Ecological Park that is an excellent place to view the local endemic bird species and enjoy nature. Additionally the foundation provides a facility for important biological field work.

But first, not thinking of proper research, I made no difference between questions, nor were the mentioned destinations really visited or only dreamed about. 4%: Mexico, West Papua (Indonesia), New Zealand, South Africa, Kenya. Or the lack of some expected answers. Most respondents mentioned more than one destination.
