Some 40 km north of Belgrade, Serbia, I am driving to the very end of an oxbow lake with the intention of looking for the Ruddy Shelducks ( Tadorna ferruginea ) that were found here the day before. Ruddy Shelducks do not normally show up in Serbia. Birds ducks Europe Serbia' I already have a history of searches for this species.

I have observed it before in East Anglia, but never in Serbia and recently it was confirmed from a photo taken in Belgrade. Last but not least, there are only two or three conformed sightings of this northern species, rare in Serbia. Valentine’s Day , one of them visiting Poland and Germany in the meantime).

To date individuals have been recorded from nine different countries in Europe; our Med Gulls are coming from Germany, Holland, Poland and other countries as far east as Serbia. Recently local birder Steve Holliday spent some time collating all the local information on ringing reports for this species with some interesting results.
