Ponds and estuaries fill up with passage waders and the birding gets good after the summer lull as we rise slowly and surely towards the fever pitch of autumn. To date individuals have been recorded from nine different countries in Europe; our Med Gulls are coming from Germany, Holland, Poland and other countries as far east as Serbia.

Some 40 km north of Belgrade, Serbia, I am driving to the very end of an oxbow lake with the intention of looking for the Ruddy Shelducks ( Tadorna ferruginea ) that were found here the day before. I have observed it before in East Anglia, but never in Serbia and recently it was confirmed from a photo taken in Belgrade. Last but not least, there are only two or three conformed sightings of this northern species, rare in Serbia. But, some ten years later, this birding life really got complicated: we got another large gull!
