I hid behind my futon while my pet rabbit Dougal peered up at my from beneath it. I heard Hairy Woodpeckers , at first I thought an adult, but then also young. I played the hairy woodpecker call on my phone, a chick responded and creeped up towards the entrance. I left the Hairy Woodpeckers to their chicks and biked home.

I’m now petting my rabbit Dougal, 6 more birds dead. Hawks (or Merlins like the above bird eating a Red-bellied Woodpecker) come to feeders but they would be killing birds whether there is a feeder or not. I just looked over at my husband–bam 5 birds dead. I don’t deny that feeders can cause bird deaths.
