What Happened in Costa Rica on Global Big Day, 2017

In Costa Rica, we did our part and were elated to finish with more than 640 species. Keel-billed Toucan , one of three toucan species seen during our day of birding. Overhead, we got our first species in the form of a calling Black-bellied Whistling-Duck. The weather kept cooperating but it was another story for the birds.

Birding crème de la crème: Asia – Corbett to Taman Negara

Knowing that there are reserves with long lists of 600 or more species, I set my threshold at more than 600 birds… and found only a few such hotspots. In early November 2020, there were 15 countries with more than 1000 species eBirded so far. Other than that, there are barely a few hotspots with over 500 species.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of March 2011)

For Corey, this was a weekend without a single standout species but with many birds that were pretty darn neat. I suspect though that once we get past the Ides of March (beware!) we might have a shot at another spring. And isn’t that an inspiring thought? Enjoy the details and proof here. Though it is certainly bad news that the U.S.
