The beaches further south of Boulders Beach are productive as well – I saw African Oystercatcher as well as that most typical beach wanderer, the Ostrich. The resident pair of Spotted Eagle Owls and I agree on this. And it also is a very pleasant place to be. A great place to see even Greater Flamingos.

The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History boasts an entire collection of skins of birds native to the DC area, from large Bald Eagles to tiny Eastern Screech Owls. For any of us who have seen Ostriches or Emus in real life, the link is not hard to believe. In early June, I took note of each museum bird I spotted.

Anyway, I was much keener to see this kingfisher than the Emu (who I consider to be a bit of an underprivileged ostrich). While the Double-barred Finch is sometimes referred to as Bicheno’s finch or as the owl finch , a much nicer other name is owl finch, which is derived from the dark ring of feathers around the face ( source ).
