Birding by Volunteering

This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. I bring this up not to boast (well, not much) but because I think that this approach to wildlife travel is somewhat neglected in birding circles.

It tends to be the Jersey natives who drive too fast and refuse to build fences in their backyards who view wildlife as the enemy. You also note that “counting deer is an imprecise science” and that an aerial survey is expensive, “but some believe it yields the most accurate count.”

The Latin species name hemilasius (half-hairy or half-shaggy) sounds less like a majestic raptor and more like a neglected hippie – but maybe this is deliberate, which I guess would make the bird a hipster. But I may well be wrong.
