These days, we have a bit more coverage but the trick to connecting with a Hudwit in Costa Rica is the same as finding rare migrants anywhere; luck to be in the right place at just the right time.

A few nights ago, I sat out in a light snow/rain mix, in the pitch black of Madera Canyon, trying to find a Whiskered Screech Owl. By 7:30, two of the owls starting calling back and forth across the small ravine, and I had my 1300th bird! With four days to go in 2018, why not try for a few more, right?

Germany’s Great Bustards and how to see them

Follow the track through a gap in the pine tree plantation and immediately turn right. Once you’re on the tower, the bustards are often seen towards the right. This is prohibited under German nature conservation laws and a moral no-go. You will then see an observation tower for viewing the Great Bustards.
