These are not subject monkeys, but they are part of the breeding colony. The last of nine monkeys that escaped from the Oregon National Primate Research Center in Hillsboro was found at 2 p.m. Nine Japanese macaque monkeys got loose Friday after their keeper left the cage unlocked and they figured out how to open the door.

Here's a post on the Red, Green and Blue blog about the unspeakable trade in macaque monkeys as research subjects. They are considered an environmental pest because they are a non-native species that inflict ecological damage.but to deal with them this way is just unacceptable.

Late last month, while searching for bears , woodpeckers and spirits of Greece, I deliberately avoided checking any news, especially from my home country. We are facing a plague of poaching that is again decimating the species. A different research says, from 2002 to 2011 the known populations of forest elephants declined by 62%.

If this was America, we might not be concerned because starlings are an invasive species, at least in North America. From National Geographic News : Cassin’s auklets are tiny diving seabirds that look like puffballs. Researchers are wondering if the die-off might spread to other birds or even fish.

Nineteen days later we had racked up an amazing list of 436 species, including some of Africa’s least known birds such as Congo Serpent Eagle , Yellow-footed Honeyguide , Tessmann’s Flycatcher , Yellow-bearded Greenbul , Black-collared Lovebird and much besides. We also knew we had discovered Africa’s next hot birding destination.
