The views were filled with scrubby, low vegetation, dramatic mountains, sheep herds, and sheep herders. The herders are nomadic groups that move sheep from place to place, staying in brick structures that dot the landscape. We traveled maybe ten miles on the only road before turning back around. Birding was tougher.

By this I mean applying the term antelope to cover all of the family Bovidae, which would include the sheep, goats and ox. It isn’t just tourists and game hunters that like them though; Painted Wolves are also big fans, as they are easier to bring down than the larger species but have more meat to eat than a small duiker.

My only wish, a tasty fish … Anyway, the spectacular scenery of New Zealand’s South Island does more than provide stunning wide angle shots for Peter Jackson to use in his films, it provides a home for many great species of bird (not to mention also provide some of the finest walking country in the world).

Go vegan, go vegetarian, go humane or just eat less meat. Indeed, many paleoanthropologists maintain that the evolution of the large, energy-hungry human brains depended on a transition of our ancestors’ diets to include meat. Wolves eat sheep. It’s all good advice from the point of view of doing better by animals.

In my native Serbia, I’ve observed this species in winter only once, while here in East Anglia every site held one. Next were the wet meadows of Tunstall Marshes (cover photo), where grazing sheep awaited us and, among them, Mute Swans. Still, the tide was not nearly as high as we hoped for and all the birds were quite far away.

Wildlife conservation is concerned with protecting wildlife at the level of species or perhaps population.
