If however you are a larger “mouse”-like rodent you are a rat. But of course the mammalian meat eaters will be happy too and reproducing like there’s no tomorrow. In German, if you are a rodent and you are smaller than – say – a human hand, you’re a mouse. You’re not a vole or a gerbil.

Cows are considered sacred by majority of Hindus so cow meat is generally not consumed. Of the estimated 500 million cattle in India, only 4% were destined for consumption by humans as meat. The disappearance of vultures has allowed other species such as rat and [stray] dog populations to grow. No one knew why they were dying.

People would often express surprise that I, someone that cared about wildlife conservation, would eat meat. Take a project to remove rats from the Californian island of Anacapa (in the Channel Islands). Not from an environmental perspective but from a “don’t you like animals?” ” one.
