Many of us have difficulty with the idea of keeping “pets.” When it comes to pets, the only reasons he considers for keeping pets have to do with the enrichment of the lives of people. The campaign to moralize meat has largely been a failure. But I’m merely making his point.

As a longtime vegan with three vegan-from-birth children, I would like to suggest that since vegetarians are generally healthier than meat eaters, there is no excuse for compassionate people to eat animals. For the same reason that most of us would not eat our pets, we should also not eat chickens, pigs or other animals.

That's because those who read Animal Ethics with regularity know that there are many compelling reasons to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle. a vegetarian diet is associated with a lower risk of death from ischemic heart disease.

To the Editor: Re “ PETA’s Latest Tactic: $1 Million for Fake Meat ” (news article, April 21): The commercial development of meat from animal tissue won’t result in “fake meat” any more than cloning sheep results in fake sheep. A more accurate name for the end result would therefore be “clean meat.”
