The waterfowl flock was made up of two very unique looking species: the Fulvous and Black-belled Whistling Ducks. Encompassing over 30,000 acres, the refuge protects birds of course, but also butterflies, mammals, and more. After noting as many species as possible, I high-tailed it back to the car. What made my eyes widen?

That’s pretty amazing–Bolivia has more bird species than India! The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. The guide covers 1,433 species, the number of birds documented at the end of 2014, the cutoff point for the book.

It is the 100th Anniversary of the extinction of the species known as the Passenger Pigeon and writers are paying attention. “Winter Sports in Northern Louisiana: Shooting Wild Pigeons.” Amazingly, with all the historical eyewitness accounts of the species, there are things we do not know for sure.

There is a small resident population in Polk County, Florida, in the middle of the peninsula, mostly on protected land, and once in a while they show up in a place where they can be easily observed. Whooping Crane is not listed as a “sensitive species” for Florida, and there are reports for other locations in the area.
