The HBW even mentions the importance of Ruoergai for this species: “Key sites for migrants include the Ruoergai Plateau (China), which is also an important breeding area” Common Mergansers also seem to use these wetlands as breeding area. Understated elegance is also something the White-browed Tit is rather good at.

It was here that I discovered my first White Ibis, my first Eastern Towhee, my first Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher , and while these species may be “common” to me now they filled me with wonder then. A Green Heron stood stock-still as we passed, blending in with the raised oyster beds recently exposed by the retreating tidal waters.

There are sixteen pairs of Pied Oystercatchers and they have varying success at raising young birds. Thankfully with the longevity of this species it appears the population is fairly stable, but this may not always be the case if predation continues at the rate that it is. The last time they successfully raised a chick was in 2012.

This species was discovered (shot, actually) in the 19th century, only to be lost through the entire 20th century. The Forest Owlet is an endemic species of this mountain range. This year is the eighteenth year since we discovered our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in Broome and it didn’t take us long to realise that they are not at all successful at raising young due to egg and chick predation. He last raised a chick successfully in 2016 and has nested in this area since 2008.

You can notice in the above images how the Leopard uses her eye-lids as hoods to protect her sensitive eyes from the bright sun as she sprinted towards us. Sitting down, she raised this leg and pulled them out using her teeth, after a few more paces, she then raised her front right leg and pulled out another thorn!

This species are long living and so the population appears to be sustainable at this stage despite the predation. The Pied Oystercatchers are actually incredibly predictable when it comes to the dates that they lay eggs, the locations that they choose and the various strategies that each pair use in order to protect their young.
