Four moments (and species) stand out in my own personal birding renaissance: I put an improvised birdbath in my yard to see if I can get the House Sparrows to stop munching on my lettuce plants, and a stunning Black-vented Oriole arrives to bathe. I start visiting a nearby canyon to see what other species might be around.

Black-chested Sparrow is one of Paso Ancho’s flagship species. Once I moved to the riverbank, I got to see something else I had never seen before: a Squirrel Cuckoo , drying itself after a good bath. And I, for one, choose not to let the lack of a few species ruin my enjoyment of many more. A Golden Vireo showed up.

In the relatively brief period, my group had something on the order of 450 species. They bounce around limbs like jays and scurry like squirrels. In fact, let’s just just go with “squirrel-jays”, because that’s pretty close. More to come as I law out the trip in my head better.

The law of diminishing returns brings the inevitability of repeat sightings and has checked the momentum of the combined beats’ list for June. Despite recording 370 species during the month, the list total has advanced by just 45. Just to confuse things a little, only 14 new species were recorded since June 1 st. 09 Jan 2016.

It is also a month when the Law of Diminishing Returns over-took itself. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species. Squirrel Cuckoo – Piaya cayana. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds.
