The State of Louisiana has increased fines for illegal killing of bears. The Refuge in partnership with other publicly owned (State of Vermont) lands has been designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. The refuge is already open to sport fishing.

As a country, we place so little value on the creatures that give up their lives to satisfy our hunger. Unfortunately, that is unlikely to happen any time soon.
