They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). With a picture of the then-queen of Thailand on it, if I remember correctly. Blue-throated Bee-eaters build nests on sticks sticking out of the water. Lucky him, right?

It’s kind of an odd spot, a mix of protected wetland and mangroves mixed with some manicured lawns and parking. It’s actually a surprisingly nice location and one you can ge a lot of great birds that are hard to get elsewhere in Thailand. The Cherokee nation called them “Peace Eagles” owing to the fact that they never killed a living thing – and also that they tended to show up in numbers after battled when peace treaties were being signed, though admittedly that may have been for a slightly more macabre reason.
