The killing of Cecil was equated with murder, a moral crime rather than a symptom of a ecological problem. Reasonable people can disagree on the conservation impacts on hunting, on the benefits and costs, and on the morality and wisdom of using it as a conservation tool. But there has to be a conversation.

I also watched a red fox bury her mate after a cougar had killed him. Crows from the remote Pacific island of New Caledonia show incredibly high-level skills when they make and use tools. It does not make them more or less a "tool." To view someone who spends their life starving, piercing, mutilating, terrifying and killing others as a mentor is shocking.
