Well, Copenhagen Zoo is back in the news; a few weeks after killing a giraffe and feeding it to some lions, it went and killed some of those same lions. If the whole thing passed you by then Mother Jones did a good piece on why zoos sometimes have to kill individuals for the good of the species.

They are also threatened by cultural beliefs that lead to killing them because they’re seen as harbingers of death and bad luck. Wolf Lichen is rich in toxic vulpinic acid and in the old days was boiled up with meat and used to poison wolves. They are also hunted. It’s a lot of work.

The quail, guans, ducks and pheasant are hunted for their meat. Little boys kill thousands of birds each year with slingshots. The very least that one could do is opt to have only one child, which will minimize the pressures and demands on the natural resource base. It is quite simple. Also, no one should have birds as pets.

There was no meaningful discussion about our inefficient use of resources (grain and water) in the feeding of animals to kill to feed people. And the wife says that one thing the family does is eat less meat and eggs (and they raise the animals on their land), but even that is glossed over. But they dismiss food.
