We sing about them, we paint them, we use them as mythic and poetic symbols for our spiritual and emotional feelings, we wear them in myriad and often colorful ways, we adopt them as household pets. We worship birds, we hunt birds, we protect birds, and, yes, we eat birds. As they say, the relationship is complicated.

More than 150 bird species are known to have become extinct over the past 500 years, and many more are estimated to have been driven to extinction before they became known to science. Habitat destruction, hunting and disturbance are further factors affecting the population.

Unfortunately, Hen Harriers die disproportionally near British Grouse moors – most likely killed illegally by people hunting grouse for sports ( source ). On the other hand, in the West, mice, and rats are also kept as pets, maybe with the same logic. So much for this post’s pseudo-philosophical thought.
