A Near Conjunction

Cocoa Woodcreepers are the largest species of woodcreeper in T&T, and they have a proportionately massive bill. Many friends and guests enjoyed seeing this particular bird soar, hunt, or even sit for hours in the valley. It glared at something in the leaf litter (is there any other way raptors look at anything?)

CBC in Paradise

A pair of Yellow Warblers hunted insects in the canopy, and a Northern Waterthrush did the same just over the surface of the water. A Spectacled Thrush foraged among the leaf litter. This endearing and very familiar species grabbed the attention of all present, including the official event photographer from the THA!

Asia’s Deadliest Bird: The Brown Prinia

The prinias are a group of around 25 Old World warbler species found in Africa and Asia. The Brown Prinia is an Asian species with a very peculiar range.

And the two species were not inclined to get on, by which I mean that Lions will kill other large predators including Painted Wolves. Her concern was well founded.

Picathartes – Africa’s strangest birds

They diverged at approximately the same time as the rockjumpers (two quite unique bird species endemic to Southern Africa and now in their own family), and as a result for a while were even placed in the same family. Forest cover in both species’ ranges is being destroyed at an unsustainable rate and these birds’ populations are dwindling.

Interestingly, these juveniles look more similar to another species, the Pale-billed Parrotbill, than the adult babblers – and they sometimes are part of the same flock.
