I viewed them at dusk, through a telescope, from a ridge overlooking the area they were hunting. A Red Fox in Georgia, not looking very red I’ve never been to Svalbard, so I haven’t ticked off polar bear, but I have seen brown bears on a number of occasions in both Romania and Bulgaria.

As we speak, in Serbia these birds are still hunted in August and September. In all European Union countries to the north and east of Serbia (except Romania), Turtle Doves are strictly protected. And on their way south, they reach the killing fields of northern Serbia ( Newsweek on poaching in the Balkans ).

Habitat destruction combined with hunting has pushed them away from their former breeding grounds. The Pastures of Great Bustard occupy 6770 ha of extensive steppe, bordered by meadows, pasture, arable fields and seasonally inundated depressions in the north of the country, towards the triple border with Romania and Hungary.
