Kaufman knows that duck hunters can be ardent, loving conservationists, too. Kaufman is a terrific writer and A Season on the Wind is a terrific book.

All eight hunters on the commission think it’s a good idea to shoot cranes in Kentucky. Why allow hunters to shoot right into the middle of them? A hunting season on sandhill cranes vastly increases the chance that collateral kill of endangered whooping cranes will occur. Could Ohio lose its entire pioneer breeding population?

Oh, and yes, some do also kill our local “turkey”, the Great Curassow. We were in the right places at the right times, this is how two birders from Ohio and myself saw this majestic trio of birds. Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Texas and North Dakota together account for 88% of the total yearly kill of sandhill cranes. This represents 6% of the estimated mid-continental spring population of 322,700 birds for the same two decades.

This almost certainly can be argued to be true just on the basis of logic, because feral Cats are proficient hunters and are entirely out of ecological place. This is approximated by the size of the animal, but really, this has to be adjusted for depending on modality of killing. We estimate that free-ranging domestic cats kill 1.4–3.7

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? Do all hunters realize that? Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.

Fuller has not preached about the evils of the human practices that killed and dislocated the Passenger Pigeon; he hasn’t moaned and groaned or sentimentalized. In both countries, birds have been killed for reasons of food, commerce, and sport. It wasn’t just the mass killings in so many ways.
