Not bad given that the 5 families in the inner circle of the laughingthrush family have a combined number of about 68 species. The Hainan version is sometimes considered a separate species, in which case it is classified as Near Threatened. 36, if my counting is right and there has been no very recent split or lump.

There’s something very matter-of-fact about seeking out non-native target species. So when Nutmeg Mannikin was finally, at long last, added to the ABA list last summer, it was a foregone conclusion that those birders at the ABA’s San Diego rally, of which I was one, would need to make a trip out of our way to get it.

Sea World San Diego just welcomed the world’s first “test-tube” penguin. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the bugs that cause House Finch Eye Disease have shown up in other species of birds. Humans won the evolutionary race in the long run, but Neanderthals seem to have pioneered the use of birds as a food source.

Kooyman (co-author with Jim Mastro) spent decades studying Emperor Penguins and can be considered the world’s foremost expert on the species. Empire Penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) are the largest living penguin species, almost four feet tall (taller when they stretch), and the least likely to be seen on birding or nature trips.
