He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. In my opinion, the crux of the question touches on what is “humane.” Here is my opinion.

What the utilitarian who defends human carnivorousness must say, then, is something like this: that the amount of pleasure which humans derive per pound of animal flesh exceeds the amount of discomfort and pain per pound which are inflicted on the animals in the process, all things taken into account. Is this plausible?

Humane treatment runs counter to the entire industry when the point is to make money by processing these animals as fast as possible. While a nationwide vegan or vegetarian lifestyle change is highly unlikely, the abuse can be maintained through increased government regulation. Most animals in the U.S.

One manager told PETA Eats that most people prefer the vegetarian lettuce wraps over those with chicken. Oh, the humanity! Vegans are people who don't eat any animal products, and that includes foods that have been processed with sugar that is made with bone char. Balderdash, I tell you!

And I suspect that people become vegetarians for precisely that reason: that by doing so they overcome the residue of guilt that attaches to every form of hubris, and in particular to the hubris of human freedom. Piety is the remedy for religious guilt, and to this emotion we are all witting or unwitting heirs.
