The Red-fan Parrot breaks the mold by having elongated red feathers with purple tips that it can erect to form a spectacular mane around the head. Although nearly all are colorful, parrots are actually quite conservative when it comes to extravagant plumes.

My personal favorites are the images that show the relationships that are at the heart of this book–a Linneated Woodpecker perched opposite a bromeliad on an exposed tree, Azteca ants on a cecropia tree whose decaying parts provide food, and, a little distressingly, two Capuchin Monkeys feeding on a Toucan (thanks to James Adams).

There are are presently thought to be five species of kiwi with a possible sixth extinct species, all of which have suffered varying degrees of range contraction since the arrival of humans. The Bay of Islands is a very popular area for tourists, both those looking for natural history and for human history. Hat-tip to Stella.

Upon our arrival in late afternoon we explored the nearby Red-capped Manakin Trail and saw a pair of Tawny-faced Quail and managed to photograph a hauler monkey, Spot-crowned Antvireo and a Black-headed Antthrush at dusk. Also this area was impacted by small towns and small farms that have setup along the access road.
