There are two Painted Bunting populations, one that breeds along the Atlantic Coast from North Carolina to Florida and one that breeds in the interior United States and northern Mexico from southeastern New Mexico to western Mississippi. The Atlantic Coast population lingers on the breeding grounds after nesting to molt.

Though I have been birding for a few years now, I had only birded west of the Mississippi once before my recent trip to Austin, Texas. Because of this, areas around the city that were once sleepy are now “urban,” with humans and wildlife struggling to keep up. I saw this first-hand during an afternoon studio walk.

In the spring of 2011 he lived in Chavarrillo, Mexico, which lies between the cities of Veracruz and Xalapa on the east side of the country. Brown Jays are abundant throughout eastern Mexico, perhaps even more so than their facemelting Green Jay cousins. Yellow-winged Tanagers were my frequent eye-level companions.

Susan Kailholz-Williams had raptors as her BBOTY: My best and thrilling bird of 2011: First confirmed nest of Mississippi Kites right here in Ohio. The nest was found in a gated community and the human residents were gracious enough to let a small number of birders in for a day to marvel at these gorgeous birds.
