Consider this: ninety percent of birds treated at wildlife centers are admitted as a result of human interactions that have nothing to do with “nature.” Our world has changed, and humans have created that change. Wildlife no longer exists in the same way it did before humans came on the scene. The difference seems obvious.

We started feeding mice, mealworms, and even some wild bird mix and leftovers, as they are scavengers. We released live mice into the flight so they could learn to catch and kill live prey. For a while I was afraid they were too friendly and might turn to humans if they needed food, but I’ve seen no sign of that.

As it is critically endangered (there are only about 100 left), I think it can be forgiven for killing the occasional Pale Thrush (which is listed as Least Concern). Unfortunately, Hen Harriers die disproportionally near British Grouse moors – most likely killed illegally by people hunting grouse for sports ( source ).
