Like Vick, most of us shamelessly abuse and kill animals. In university labs nationwide, scientists inflict spinal-cord injuries on dogs and cats, inject rats with carcinogens, test dangerous drugs on monkeys, and do all kinds of evil things to guinea pigs in the name of scientific research.

The causes were the usual reasons for island extinction—deforestation by both humans and invasive plants that crowded out native plants, hunting, and invasive rats, mongoose, monkeys, and, of course, feral cats. Horses bolted. A foot deep by some accounts, it killed what life was left in the forest.

A paper describes how a Golden Snub-nosed Monkey (which looks a bit like somebody had kicked Donald Trump in the nose, which in itself may probably not be such a bad idea) ate three Chinese Babax chicks from a nest in Shennongjia National Park. According to Chinese researchers, nest predation and brood parasitism are the two main reasons.
