A New York Times story that ran in 2001 about a homeless dog wandering around a suburban part of New York City, struck a chord with me. They offered him hand-outs and cared enough about him, not to call Animal Control and risk having him picked up and sent to a shelter where his fate would be doomed. Tags: books guest post.

Old-speciesists have a rights view of at least some humans but a utilitarian view of nonhumans (18). In some sense, of course, many (perhaps most) humans don't know right from wrong. And perhaps my favorite: "[I]f healthy, homeless humans were rounded up and killed, no one would call the killing facilities 'shelters'" (55).
