Guyana’s capital city of Georgetown, a quaint, sprawling network of roads and waterways is a regulated introduction to the country’s 800+ species of birds. Great Kiskadees are ubiquitous in Trinidad and Guyana, this bird’s proportions were slightly different, however.

In Guyana, this concept holds true partly because of the untamed nature of the place and also due to the fact that feeder set-ups simply aren’t that prevalent. Dusky Parrots aren’t green like many others in their family, and look much more vivid in illustrated plates than they do in the dim sub-canopy.

Ardent readers of this blog would realise by now that I have been chronicling a few days spent in Guyana last year – I felt that a single post or two would invariably exclude far too many sightings of note. Familiar, but beautiful regardless: Blue-headed Parrot Another small parrot species landed on a tree in the distance.

Guianan Cock-of-the-rock, Capuchinbird, Red Fan Parrot, Guianan Toucanet, White Bellbird, Grey-winged Trumpeters, Black Currasow. For these stunning birds are not easily found outside of the Guianas which includes Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana. Interested yet? Well, you should be.

White-tailed Tropicbird by Nathan Swick Renato chose an impressive parrot: Birding is a wonderful experience in itself. This resplendent whopper of a parrot is as charismatic as avian megafauna gets. It didn’t matter that we didn’t see much else. That kind of bird sends everyone home happy.

The afternoon birds also included Capped Heron , Mealy Parrot , Drab Water Tyrant , Amazonian Tyrannulet , Green-tailed Jacamar and more than 40 Sand-colored Nighthawks. Actually, they are all the same, single rock, the westernmost piece of the Guyana Shield geological formation, carved into two by the river and further rounded by rains.
