Arizona in Summer: It Ain’t All Hummers

So, I flew into Phoenix, Lovebird Central, and three hours after I got off the plane had a lovebird in my binoculars, at Encanto Park. Now, years later, it was time to return.

Color Me Roseate

This color also describes minivets, starlings, and thrush-tanagers, as well as the bill of a particular pochard, the face of a sweet little lovebird, and the patch and throat of a bush-shrike and longclaw respectively. Rosy Bee-eater by Adam Riley. If one is feeling fancy, the term roseate can be used to describe this cheerful hue.

Ethiopia’s Endemics

Tours groups that I guided to Ethiopia ten years ago had to endure very basic accommodation, almost no surfaced roads and low levels of service. There are also dry areas but this great diversity has resulted in an incredible bird list of over 900 species including Africa’s 2nd highest count of endemics (after South Africa).

My personal favorite, for obvious reasons , is the glowing, almost haughty female Red-necked Phalarope captioned “‘Just For A Laugh’ Is Rarely An Excuse For The Coordinated And Sustained Introduction Of Non-Native Species” But enough about words. This is an art book, and the paintings deserve a bit more analysis here.
