Currently, A Chance for Bliss sanctuary is home to 96 residents including 25 horses, 22 dogs, 8 goats, 7 pot belly pigs , 4 sheep, 2 steers, 5 ducks, 5 geese, 5 cockatiels, 4 rabbits, 3 chickens, 3 cats, 1 turkey, a one-winged pigeon, Hines, and a turtle, Bart. The oldest dog, Max, is 17, while the oldest horse, Prince is 36.

A female red-tail may leave a nest to hunt for her two chicks and return to feed a rabbit to three chicks without noting an increase in the number of chicks a rehabber has placed there. The first few years for female ducks and geese are kind of practice rounds. Birds of prey look cool, but they can’t count.

The north end of Abert Lake had close to 10,000 ducks and geese on it, so you can imagine how excited I was to get to Malhuer! My second morning at the headquarters, one of these beautiful owls swooped right over my head, in an effort to snag a small Cottontail Rabbit that was nibbling on the lawn. The bunny got away.

Aleutian Cackling Geese on Buldir Island, Alaska, where they made their final stand. Aleutian Cackling Geese are another bird very familiar with the Pacific; they are the only species of goose that nest on Alaska’s remote Aleutian Islands. is on a boat in the Aleutian chain. However, their fortunes had once turned for the worst.
