The resulting properties—WPAs—are small ponds, wetlands, and associated grasslands, primarily in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Montana, but also in Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Iowa. Key waterfowl species include Redhead , Northern Shoveler , Blue-winged Teal , Mallard , Gadwall , Wood Duck , Canvasback , and Canada Goose.

For example, Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico is renowned for its winter birding, featuring huge numbers of Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese, among others. Critically, NWRs preserve habitat and wildlife, often for endangered species. (A number of these NWRs appear on my list of the Top 25 NWRs for Birding.).

Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting. Isn’t that neat?

Before the counts, I was hoping to break 100 species, but after 21 parks reported data back to me we’re up to 183 species! found 36 species, including Killdeer (in December!), Government to set up several forts, including Fort Mitchell in western Nebraska. Kestrel , Northern Harrier , Great Blue Heron , and Wild Turkey.

I think it’s a good assumption that Peter Pyle updated and wrote species descriptions, particularly for the Hawaiian birds. These are the species that immediately come to my mind, and I probably missed some. Paul Lehman and Larry Rosche updated the map, with Lehman doing the data work and Rosche on graphics.
