David Tomlinson If you are American then you will no doubt know Perdix perdix as the Gray Partridge , an introduced game bird now widespread on the prairies of Canada and the northern states of the USA. The two species are only distantly related, for Grey Francolins are true francolins, hence the name Francolinus pondicerianus.

Given that according to the HBW, the species prefers dense primary and secondary montane forests, the note that the bird also forages among kitchen waste (in the same HBW entry) seems somewhat incongruous. Quite possibly, this laughingthrush is now locally extinct in Switzerland or at least in Basel.

I slept in hotel in Zurich but didn’t leave the airport or even clear immigration, so I can’t really say I’ve been to Switzerland either. But even without huge herds of elephants large game is defiantly the major draw for most people on the cruise. It’s arbitrary, but there you go.
