During cold winters, the hunters retreated to the south, intent on quail and other game species. I am also from the Northeast, and seeing architecture that reminded me of New York and Connecticut and even my home state of Maine beneath southern Live Oaks and Magnolias felt a bit odd. The mansion itself was magnificent.

There was a lot of hunting for Bald Eagles—it is traditionally a game species. Bald Eagles will provide a sporting challenge for hunters. Hunters don’t even need to use decoys. However they are wary and have famously sharp eyes, so bagging eagles will be a true sporting challenge for hunters.

This just might be a birding joke as old as the hills, but it’s one I hear without fail every year come Christmas Bird Count season in upstate New York. Now, Wood Ducks are somewhat uncommon in eastern New York in winter and after an inevitable few seconds of silence, some smirking wisecracker pipes up with “Do wooden duck counts?”

A bill has been introduced by two senators that would outlaw this type of contest in New York, and I started to wonder if people who really are anti-hunting could jeopardize its potential success.
