The finders of an adult Barred Owl brought to Kathryn Dudeck in Georgia thought he had a wing fracture, so they wrapped the entire bird in the plastic protective wrap used by landscape companies and taped it up. The prize for presentation goes to the folks who delivered this very small opossum to Michelle Wellard in Philadelphia.

The wood duck was very scarce in many portions of its range, at least in part, for the same reason and probably owes its present status to provision of nest boxes and protection from overhunting 1.” These are nestlings, just a few days old, in their comfy, fur-lined nest, begging for food. Talk about cute!

As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. Across the water is the Miramar Peninsula, where the Hobbit is presently being filmed. I’ll work on that.

In the early morning out on the water there were plenty of Fluttering Shearwaters and Australasian Gannets, and close to a salmon farm we found New Zealand Fur Seals as well as Pied Shags, Little Shags and Spotted Shags (I can only assume that kiwis just like calling all cormorants shags because they are all five years old).

It's too bad that Latimer's presentation is so obnoxious, as even when he raises what might be valid points, he makes you want to disagree with him. And one of that handful is the environment. He clearly hasn't heard of the low-hanging fruit concept. As for the ethic being cynical, I don't understand that so I cannot comment.

Also present in good El Nino years are the occasional and much sought after Blue Petrel with its distinctive black sub-terminal tail band with white trailing edge, a unique diagnostic feature amongst petrels.
