Snow-fronted Geese

10,000 Birds

We were at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge, of course, which is not only home to Falcated Duck, but many other birds. There are hordes of fowl here (fowl of the water) in winter, with geese having the most prominent presence. But this post is not about Falcated Duck. I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

Avian influenza H5N2 in the Mississippi and Pacific Flyways

10,000 Birds

This mainly affects domestic fowl, and in this sense is not a topic central to 10,000 Birds. Overall the problem is not huge; the total number of birds affected is small, and the market for domestic fowl is robust. Interestingly, H5N2 has been used as a vaccine for domestic fowl to prevent H5N1, the more infectious avian influenza.

Nevertheless, Chapin held out against both common sense and much scientific opinion, concluding that ‘it is more closely allied to the true peacocks than to any other genus of Phasianidae , and we fail to see that it shows any tendency to approach the guinea fowls, as has been suggested by others’.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of March 2011)

10,000 Birds

The Snow Geese at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge will soon be winging their way north, so he spent some quality time with them, his best birds of the weekend. Highlight was probably a White Throated Rock Thrush, but I’m regretting that I didnt try harder to see a Red Jungle Fowl that I heard. Enjoy the details and proof here.

Best Bird of the Year 2012

10,000 Birds

This bird spent the 2011-2012 winter at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in northern California, migrated someplace exotic and distant in February, and returned to the same pond at the beginning of this month. However, he went far afield to find a more familiar fowl. I traveled to the other side of the world just to see a chicken!
