I notice that if I use "animal rights activist" or anything with the word "rights" in it, because it's loaded and misunderstood, my listener often has an immediate bias of some kind. People have a relationship, whether or not they are aware, to the term "animal rights." And not necessarily for animals.

Vegan education/advocacy for animals is easiest for me when I know my audience. And right now, Mercy for Animals' Farm to Fridge Tour is doing that, too, in addition to picketing and getting mainstream media exposure for the short film. PETA's been using horrifying images for years.

While spending hours in the car I've been thinking about various issues related to sentient nonhumans, animal rights and veganism. And vegans are accused of imposing our belief systems and brainwashing kids? Why is the vegan message the harmful one that can get one fired from teaching? What kind of lesson is that?

I don't need to "remind myself" of how bad it is to bolster my commitment to veganism. So I do what I can do, beginning of course with being vegan. I do what I do because it's the right thing to do--not because I want a reward or fear punishment. I choose not to watch videos or bombard myself with images of suffering.

Because we planned to adopt I had been researching eco-friendly, vegan nursery items but had yet to purchase a thing. Emily has taken to sleeping right next to wherever Sky is. The message Sky gets at Babies-R-Us is largely that animals are her friends. It's very cute. At least at this stage.

Steiner might feel less lonely as an ethical vegan—he says he has just five vegan friends—if he recognized that he has allies in mere vegetarians (like me), ethical omnivores and even carnivores. If the goal is not moral perfection for ourselves, but the maximum benefit for animals, half-measures ought to be encouraged and appreciated.
