There are many wonderful things to see at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival , but the Florida Scrub-Jay is as close to a “must see bird” as you’re likely to find down here. Florida Scrub-Jays have extraordinarily specific habitat requirements, or at least it seems that way now.

But to find a Cerulean Warbler a New York birder needs a bit more information, so I included a couple of parks where they can be found.

Cockpit Country is littered with small roads that weave through agricultural areas as well as the main highway — the GPS pointed me in the direction of a newly paved road that became narrower and more pothole ridden as one continued along its length. A Jamaican Owl peers down at me from a tree at Marshall’s Pen.

Tika and her longtime mate, Kobuk, had raised eight litters of puppies together and were enjoying their retirement years in the home of my friend, Anne. A lost pit bull mutt broke up an attempted mugging of a woman leaving a playground with her son in Port Charlotte, Florida. As we all know, dogs are “man’s best friend.”

I started the year in Florida, traveled to India with the ABA in February, combined family and birding in an August trip to California, and in-between saw very good birds in New York and New Jersey. Seeing this giant, awkward yet majestic bird walk through the densely littered landscape was a surreal experience. (4)

South Florida is home to the most racetracks and Greyhound farms and trainers in the country, and you can’t turn on the radio or the television without encountering a commercial for the tracks. Before I could even process his presence and figure out what to do, I heard the scrapes of Emily’s paws on her litter box in the guest room bathroom.
