The days for me to add to my Little Big Years species count are getting fewer and fewer, and with it, my budget. The Pigeon Guillemot is bringing a small fish for breakfast back to the nest. I was not really able to add a lot of species to my Little Big Years list this week, but the numbers continue to climb.

To my disappointment the biggest and most visible species I saw was the introduced Common (Ring-necked) Pheasant , and my first lifer was the equally introduced Gray Partridge. And although the single Bald Eagle we spotted just outside the park was probably more interested in fish, they are known to enjoy fawn as well, when they can carry it.

Before the counts, I was hoping to break 100 species, but after 21 parks reported data back to me we’re up to 183 species! found 36 species, including Killdeer (in December!), Kestrel , Northern Harrier , Great Blue Heron , and Wild Turkey. The Battle at Antietam was the single bloodiest battle in American history.
