The tropical dry deciduous jungle, or “jungle”, however you see it, covers almost 90% of 600 km2 (230 mi2) of this protected area. For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur.

Nearly 2,500 square miles of the wildest sections of the Omo Valley are protected in the almost contiguous Omo National Park on the river’s west bank (Ethiopia’s largest park) and Mago National Park on the east bank. Yellow-billed Stork. One of them sported a pair of Standard-winged Nightjar feathers in his headband.

Danum Valley is a conservancy that protects a large area of lowland rainforest in Sabah in northeastern Borneo. This is the place, after all, that people see Sunda Clouded Leopards! Two highlights of the walk back were a bright green Greater Green Leafbird and a Lesser Fish Eagle following the road above our heads.

Kooyman was there to work at McMurdo Station (a large American research station that we hear about throughout the book) as technical assistant on a science mission involving fish. He leaves enchanted by two mammals, the Emperor Penguin and the Weddell Seal, the only mammals who totally live their whole lives, year-round, in the Antarctic.

There is little factual material here about global conservation and protection, but that is not the book’s purpose. This is the birding adventure book supreme. His humor is wicked funny, especially when pointed at birding itself. This is a travel adventure book. The urgency of preserving habitat is however ingrained in every chapter.
