Our small group spent a weekend at the Ferret Research Camp, a cluster of trailers tucked in the middle of a black-tailed prairie dog town and the site, as the name implies, of a black-footed ferret reintroduction program. Like the Rockies, though, this is a harsh beauty, not an ideal climate for the human animal by any means.

It’s that time of the year again when the humans start sniffling and sneezing! Not just dogs though, pet birds, ferrets, and even pet rats are all able to catch a cold from a person. Dogs who have colds exhibit similar symptoms to humans; lethargy, sneezing, runny noses, and watery eyes.

Secondly, New Zealand had already experienced on wave of extinction due to the introduction or rats and human hunting. Ferrets, stoats and weasels were released and quickly became destructive vermin in their own right, quickly causing the extinction of the Laughing Owl and stymieing efforts to establish game birds.

In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animal rights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. Animal rights is concerned with preventing the suffering or even use of animals by humans.
